WELCOME

to the 2016-2017 school year!

We are really getting back into the swing of things in PE this year!  This week we talked about locomotor skills (jumping, running, skipping, galloping, sliding, etc.) and pathways (straight, winding, and zigzag)

See if your student can give you some examples of locomotor skills and pathways.

Along with learning a big word like "locomotor" we also learned the word "obstacle".

Then we had great fun pretending that our gym was a jungle, and we had to make our way through all the obstacles using our locomotor skills and pathways!

We just finished a striking unit in PE.  We learned that "to strike" something means "to hit" it.  We discussed lots of activities that we can do where we strike something, like:
volleyball, tennis, baseball, softball, pool, hockey, ping pong, and lots of others.
We did fun activities to practice striking.  We used our hands   to strike balloons, we played "Sneetch Ball" (that was a little like volleyball), we played scooter hockey and we played table hockey.  Table hockey will come out again around Field Day.

Field Day, by the way,  will be coming before we know it.  It is scheduled this year for Friday, May 6.  Save the date!!

Two former OCPS students who are now 5th graders came for Read Across America Week and read to one of my PE classes.  They did a great job.  The students even got Dr. Seuss bookmarks to take home!

We have had LOTS of fun things going on in the gym since we've been back from the break in December!  So much that I haven't had time to get it all reported!  I am so excited to announce that we raised almost $5,000.00 for The American Heart Association through our Jump Rope for Heart event!!

Way to go OCPS families!!!

Below are a couple of videos we made in PE.  Our students announced on our morning news how much we raised and the winners of the "How Many Dogs are in the Park?" contest.

As soon as Jump Rope for Heart was over we started right in our bowling unit.  We finished that up with a Bowling in the Dark Party!  Here are a few pictures...
